Destination Nowhere Solitude in America reports Utah has the darkest skies in the West at Natural Bridges NM. Some of the lower 48 state's least-crowded backcountry includes Arches NP with 277 acres per hiker and Capitol Reef with 213 acres per hiker.
Don't Pay at the Pump Take the UTA bus at 6200 S. Wasatch in Salt Lake City to Alta Ski Area where you can take hike on the Cecret Lake Trail, scale Devil's Castle and enjoy the wildflowers along Big Cottonwood Canyon and Patsy Marley Ridge.
Trip Finder Luxe Hikes Glen Canyon NRA Coyote Gulch has a shady camp a few miles upstream from the Escalante River. Some possible side trips include Cliff Arch, pictographs near Coyote Natural Bridge, and Jacob Hamblin Arch.

Fresh Tracks GPS Ride Guide St. George on three epic routes. Hurricane Cliffs is a 22-mile loop. Breakfast first at Main Street Cafe, then stop by Over the Edge Sports and ride up UT59 to Goulds Rim Trail, JEM Trail, Hurricane Rim Trail and into Zion. Santa Clara Barrel Roll's is intermediate and loops in the Santa Clara River Reserve. Use the dirt roads to connect to Stucki Springs and the Red Rock Desert Rampage. Lunch at Panama Grill on St. George's Ancestor Square. Zen Trail is more difficult through desert scrub and over off-kilter boulders. Use your GPS on this one.

BACKPACKER May 2008 Land of the Lost in Range Creek are found petroglyphs, cliff-side granaries, grinding stones and other well-preserved artifacts left by the Fremont, the native people who lived here and throughout Utah from 700 to 1400 AD, when they mysteriously disappeared. Designated campsites within the canyon are in the works, but for now it's prohibited so pitch your tent outside the North Gate. Permits are required ($5 per person per day) and only available at Utah's Division of Wildlife Resources website.

O'Shucks, a raucous Main Street joint is "festooned with surfboards, its tables topped with bowls of peanuts". The over-40 set will be happy "with a martini among the Dale of Norway crowd at the elegant Troll Hallen Lounge at the Stein Eriksen Lodge".
SKIING February/March 2008 A Pocket Guide to Powder Mountain With access by lift, snowcat, heli and converted school bus, Powder Mountain offers one-stop schralping just 55 miles from Salt Lake City. For the biggest bang off the Paradise quad, ski beneath the Lift to short but steep Saddle Chute and Eureka, skier's left of the spine. Take a single guided heli drop and grab 2,800 vertical feet of untouched powder off nearby James Peak before hitching a lift.
